A data centre fire is not like any other building fire. The assets inside — servers, switching equipment, storage arrays, power infrastructure — are irreplaceable in the short term and represent billions of rupees of capital investment. The data they hold — financial records, citizen databases, telecommunications routing tables, security system logs — is more valuable still. A fire that destroys a data centre does not just damage hardware. It can bring down telecommunications networks, disable payment systems, shut off city surveillance, and take months to restore to full operational capacity.

Why Data Centres Require Specialist Fire Door Installations (UL 10C | BS 476 | EN 1634-1)

A data centre is designed to be accessed as infrequently as possible. Doors are not opened and closed hundreds of times per day — they may be accessed only a few times per week for routine maintenance. But when a fire emergency occurs, those doors must perform perfectly on first use, under pressure, in conditions they may never have been tested in since installation. This makes certification and installation quality even more critical than in a high-traffic environment — there is no operational feedback loop that would reveal a problem before the emergency occurs.

Data centres also operate under positive air pressure to keep dust and contaminants out of equipment rooms. Standard fire door seals are designed for neutral or negative pressure environments. In a data centre, the door must maintain its fire and smoke rating while also managing the positive pressure differential — which requires specifically selected intumescent seals and door hardware that can hold the door closed against the pressure without binding or jamming.

The suppression systems used in data centres — typically clean agent gas systems (FM-200, Novec 1230) or inert gas systems — are triggered automatically on fire detection and flood the room with suppression agent. Fire doors must seal the room completely at the moment of suppression so the agent concentration is maintained long enough to suppress the fire. A leaking fire door renders the entire suppression system ineffective.

Telecom Data Centres — The Specific Requirements (UL 10C | BS 476 | EN 1634-1)

Pakistan’s major telecommunications operators — PTCL, Zong, Jazz, and Telenor — maintain data centres that house the core routing, switching, and billing infrastructure for networks serving hundreds of millions of subscribers. A fire in one of these facilities affects not just the company but every subscriber on the network. Our installations at PTCL and the major telecom operators were specified to UL 10C and BS 476 Part 22 to match the international standards used in the parent companies’ global data centre portfolios.

Huawei Pakistan’s data centre installations presented additional requirements — Huawei’s global facility standards specify fire door assemblies with specific hardware configurations, vision panel placement, and access control integration. Safe City and Government Data Infrastructure (UL 10C | BS 476 | EN 1634-1)

The Lahore Safe City project operates a centralised data centre that receives, processes, and stores video feeds from thousands of surveillance cameras across the city. The loss of this facility in a fire event would blind the city’s entire surveillance and emergency response capability. The fire door assemblies installed at the Lahore Safe City data centre were specified to 90-minute rating with full smoke sealing, vision panels, and electronic access control integration — allowing authorised access while maintaining the fire compartmentation integrity of the facility.

Where Fire Doors Are Required in a Data Centre (UL 10C | BS 476 | EN 1634-1)

The primary server hall — the room housing the main server racks and storage arrays — must be fully fire-compartmentalised with doors rated to at least 60 minutes, typically 90 minutes for larger facilities. The UPS room, where the battery backup systems are housed, presents a specific fire risk from lithium-ion battery failures and requires its own fire door compartmentation rated to 90 minutes minimum.

Generator rooms, electrical distribution rooms, and cooling plant areas must each be individually compartmentalised. The cable management areas — where power and data cables enter and leave the server hall — must have fire-rated access doors and proper penetration sealing to prevent fire travelling along cable routes.

Data centres are audited against standards including TIA-942, Uptime Institute Tier standards, and ISO/IEC 27001 — all of which include fire safety provisions.
